This is a long but fun DIY! I've been doing this origami "star" ,as i like to call it, since I was 14. And, I've taken it beyond its "paper stage". I will show you different things that you can do with the star in other DIYs. Today I will show you step by step how to make the star. You need 30 perfect squares of paper. Mine's were 3.5 inches. I suggest doing your first star with regular printing paper. A thicker paper could be a little frustrating specially if it is your first attempt. Then you can use as many colors and type of papers as you like. I always use 1 or 3 colors. Let's get to it :)
Fold one piece of paper in half and make sure the mark of the fold is visible. This would be your guide for the rest of the folds. Open up the paper and take the right bottom corner to the center and fold it. Make sure you ALWAYS fold the bottom right corner first and that the mark of the first fold you did is on top of the triangle you just created with the last fold. Take the top left corner and bring it to the center. Now, flip the paper over. Place the paper in front of you so that the widest part of the paper is horizontal. Take the bottom right corner and create a fold so that the edge of the bottom of the paper ends up parallel with the line going across the paper.(Follow the pictures also so you don't get lost). Do the same using the left top corner so the widest edge of the paper is parallel and overlaps the line across the paper. Now, turn it so the paper is vertical and flip it over. Take the left top corner and fold it creating a triangle. As reference, use the top right corner of the paper that will be the top point of the triangle. Now, fold the little flap that is sticking out the triangle to make the perfect triangle shape. Turn the paper up side down and do the same with this side. Take the top left corner and fold it creating a triangle, fold the flap sticking out and now you should have two perfect triangles one looking to the north and another one to the south :) Flip over the paper and fold your shape in half. And that is basically all the folding you need to do. Once your hands get used to the folds it would be very easy. Now, you have to do the same with the 30 squares of paper.
Now, take one of the papers and open it up so you have the 2 triangles looking to opposite directions again. Take the little flap from the left side and bring it to the right side like if you were unfolding the top triangle. Do the same with another paper. Here we are going to start building the star. Insert the paper on you left side in to the other one. Matching the folds on each paper that create a triangle shape. You will notice when the 2 papers a locked. Take a third paper and do the same process. Now use the first and last paper to close the peak by doing the same process of inserting one paper into there other one. You should have a peak with 3 triangle sides. Now, take one of the triangles of the peak you just created, open it up and start doing the same process. This time you only need 2 extra papers because you are using one from the peak that counts as the third. Keep doing this until you have 4 peaks. When you are here, create the 5th peak by using the two bottom triangles of 2 of the peaks with the same process as before. Opening up each paper and inserting one paper into the other. Then take a third paper and close up the peak just like you did before. This is how your star will start coming together so always pay attention when you have 4 of these peaks. Keep forming groups of 5 peaks until you don't have more papers. You should now have 3 loose papers, insert one into each other like you did before and you are done! If your star doesn't look like it is closing go back and make sure you have groups of 5 peaks! Well, I hope you are not intimidated but the length of the tutorial. I guarantee you it looks wayyyyy longer than it really is. Try it out and have fun with the different colors and papers you can use. They are awesome for decorating or even hanging them!
I love the palet of color that you are using y your blog, your Ideas area really original.!!!!
